Born Kendal.
Attended towns grammar school, where he was a fellow pupil
of George Romney (1734-1802). Left for London in the late 1760s
and may have worked with Romney. Entered the Royal Academy in 1770
(Silver Medallist 1771), where he received instruction from Zoffany,
Dance, and Bartolozzi. Assisted in Sir Joshua Reynolds studio
briefly in 1773. Established a fashionable practice. Gardner specialized
in small-scale portraits in crayons or gouache, often borrowing
Reynolds poses. His oils date circa 1779 and are rare.
